Saltmarsh Redshank Recovery Project

The Saltmarsh Redshank Recovery Project – partly funded through the Action for Birds in England (AfBiE) partnership and the Life on the Edge programme – is a targeted conservation initiative that brings together research and practical habitat management to help safeguard Redshank breeding on saltmarshes. As part of this work, the RSPB and Natural England have jointly developed the Saltmarsh Redshank Recovery Plan Framework for England, which outlines a strategic approach to supporting the recovery of saltmarsh breeding populations and offers clear guidance for land managers and conservation practitioners. This framework is complemented by a suite of practical resources, including the Saltmarsh Management Toolkit and the Saltmarsh Audit, all available to download from this page.

Saltmarsh Redshank Recovery Plan Framework:

This document provides a comprehensive framework for slowing down the long-term decline of breeding Redshank on England’s saltmarshes. It summarises information on population trends, saltmarsh ecology, and the main pressures driving population declines. It also outlines evidence-based recovery approaches, and national objectives and priority actions to 2050 for land managers, conservation practitioners and policymakers.

Saltmarsh Management Toolkit:

This document provides practical, accessible guidance for managing and enhancing saltmarsh habitats across the UK for the benefit of breeding Redshank and other wildlife. The toolkit also outlines current funding opportunities and includes templates and troubleshooting guidance for land managers and conservation practitioners.

Note: this is an evolving resource. Case studies and additional examples of good practice will be added as and when they become available.

Saltmarsh Audit:

These documents provide a structured template for assessing the condition of saltmarsh habitats, with a focus on breeding and wintering bird assemblages. The audit supports land managers, conservation practitioners, and agencies in identifying priorities, tracking change, and informing effective saltmarsh management.
